Bio:
In order to help reach the
goal of 50, I am submitting the Cliffs Notes version of the last 42 years.
In the fall of 1963, I entered the School of Engineering at Vanderbilt
University. Over the next nine months, I discovered that studying, partying and
living at home did not mix. Something had to be resolved. The solution to my
problem was a transfer to OLE MISS where I was able to concentrate on my
partying, unfettered by parental restraint. I did, however, manage to achieve
the g.p.a. required to be initiated into S.A.E. Fraternity and eventually
graduate in August of 1967 with a B.B.A. degree.
After graduation there followed several months of general goofing off as I
recovered from the strain of a couple of years of serious study. In 1968, I
started to work for my father's construction company with the mindset that I
would be the CEO in a matter of months and move up to Chairman of the Board by
years end. Though my lofty expectations did not materialize, life was good
until the unthinkable happened in 1971. Old Dad's company failed. He lost all
of his corporate and most of his personal assets. This turned out to be a good
news, bad news scenario. The bad news: construction scion had no inheritance.
The good news: he had to mature and get serious about the future.
Two years of various sales and other jobs followed. In 1973, I co-founded
Capitol City Contractors, Inc. After buying out my partners in the late 70's, I
became the sole owner of a company that has completed hundreds of Metro
Nashville, State of Tennessee and privately funded construction projects in its
thirty-two years of continuous operation. In 2001 my wife and I established
Gregory Properties, LLC for the purpose of buying and selling agricultural
properties in the Mississippi Delta. The Company also farms and develops land
for duck hunting. We now spend about half our time in Mississippi. By the way,
Mississippi is my birth state and the place in which I spent the first five
years of my life.
I have semi-retired from the construction business after reducing my workforce
from forty-five employees to three. Being able to step back and enjoy life
would not be possible if not for the total support and encouragement of my wife,
the former Patti Reeves. She took a huge leap of faith and married me in 1974.
In 1978 our daughter Kate was born. A son, Kendall, Jr., followed in 1980.
Neither of our children are married so I am happy to report that we have no
grandchildren.
In 1977, Patti and I purchased, from their estate, my grandparent's home on Gale
Lane in Nashville. We reside there when we are not at our home in Charleston,
MS or at our fishing camp on Dauphin Island, AL.
I realize that there are a number of holes in this bio, but there is no way I
could completely reflect upon all of the road trips with the children's'
athletic teams, the hunting and fishing trips that have allowed me to take in
the beauty of God's creation, the wonderful friends I have made and the family
with which I have been blessed. I look forward to filling in the blanks for
those interested. However, I learned many years ago that God gave us two ears
and one mouth so we might listen twice as much as we talk (especially about
ourselves).
